Daily Itinerary
Day 1
Depart Sacramento and head to sunny San Diego. Enjoy a welcome lunch at the historic 94th Aero Squadron, set inside a replica of a World War I French farmhouse. Then it’s off to the Carlsbad Flower Fields, where 55 acres of vibrant ranunculus await. Your visit includes a wagon tour through the blooms, a stroll through the Butterfly Gardens and a peek at the dazzling-stained glass exhibit. Wrap up the day by checking into your beachside hotel. With the ocean just steps away, you’ll have plenty of time to dip your toes in the Pacific and soak up the coastal vibes. Tamarack Beach Resort & Hotel, Carlsbad - 4 nights (L)
Day 2
Travel east where we are welcomed to Temecula by a lively host who shares local wine lore, Native American legends and the valley’s unique microclimate. The tour begins at Vail Headquarters, a National Historic Landmark featuring the Butterfield Overland Trail, vintage ranch artifacts, and rides in a Model-T and stagecoach. Next, enjoy wine tasting and a buffet lunch at Frangipani Estate Winery, with serene views of Mount Palomar. Our visit ends with time to explore Old Town Temecula. (CB, L)
Day 3
Today we discover more about North County as we venture to Oceanside. Our first stop will be Mission San Luis Rey, some 227 years old, known as “The King of Missions.” Next in Oceanside Harbor, we’ll hop aboard a thrilling whale and dolphin cruise. It’s prime time for gray whale sightings as they migrate from Baja but keep your eyes open as you might also spot humpbacks, minkes or playful dolphins riding the waves. (CB)
Day 4
Leave Carlsbad behind and head to one of North County’s wildest highlights, the San Diego Safari Park! Enjoy free time to explore the trails and exhibits, then hop aboard our private caravan for a deluxe safari across the African and Asian savannahs. It’s up-close, unforgettable and totally wild! After a day full of adventure, we’ll return to the hotel to relax and enjoy a festive farewell dinner with the group – great food, shared stories and a toast to an unforgettable journey! (CB, D)
Day 5
Our final day sparkles – literally! See the world’s largest crystal during a dazzling tour of the Gemological Institute of America, where the world of diamonds, gems and jewelry comes to life. Next, we marvel at mini masterpieces on display at the Miniature Engineering Craftsmanship Museum, where tiny tools and intricate models showcase big talent. After lunch on your own at Seaport Village, head to the airport for our return flight to Sacramento. (CB)
