Daily Itinerary

Day 1

Your first dinner and a good night's sleep await you in Grand Rapids, your gateway to Michigan, the Great Lakes State. DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel (D)

Day 2

Before traveling to the shores of Lake Michigan, stop at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum. While president for less than a term, Ford holds an important place in history. After lunch in the village of Cadillac, continue on the Traverse City and your home for the night. Grand Beach Resort (FB,L,D)

Day 3

At the Music House you'll discover an incredible collection of mechanical instruments, antique phonographs and the centerpiece of the museum, a huge Belgian pipe organ, all in perfect working order. Push north to Mackinaw City via lunch in Petoskey, then board the ferry for the 20-minute ride to Mackinac Island. Prepare to fall in love at first sight with its historic buildings, quaint shoppes and "no motor vehicles allowed" policy. Your historic hotel built in 1887 lives up to its name! Grand Hotel - 3 nights (CB,L,D)

Day 4

Discover Mackinac Island on your morning horse-drawn wagon tour, including a stop at the Wings of Mackinac, a butterfly conservatory. Your afternoon is free for personal exploration. Perhaps you’d like to discover locations used in the filming of "Somewhere in Time," one of the great love stories ever. (FB,D)

Day 5

A second, leisurely day on the island gives you the opportunity to visit Colonial Fort Mackinac, built by the British in the 18th century, part of a strategic network of fortifications placed to protect the Straights of Mackinac and hold those pesky Americans and Frenchmen at bay. (It didn’t work!) How about an afternoon bike ride around the island before dinner and dancing back at the Grand? (FB,D)

Day 6

Take the ferry back to the mainland and travel south to the Bavarian village of Frankenmuth. Your local guide will lead you on a tour about town before checking into your beautiful hotel. The all-you-can-eat German dinner at the famous Bavarian Inn Restaurant is one to remember, followed by a visit to Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland – the largest holiday store in the world! Bavarian Inn Lodge (FB,D)

Day 7

The memory of one of America's greatest industrialists lives on at the museum complex that bears his name. The crowning attraction at The Henry Ford Museum is Greenfield Village, an assemblage of historical buildings from around the globe saved from demise, moved here and restored, including the Eagle Tavern where lunch is served in Colonial elegance. Return to the West Coast on an evening flight out of Detroit. (FB,L)
