South Dakota is a unique combination of mountains, plains, prairies and badlands… The many cultures and peoples crossing through this area wove a colorful history. Spend six days visiting shrines to our nation’s democracy and sites sacred to Native Americans. Travel over spectacular lands of awesome wonder, of nature in action, rolling hills, vast prairies and sandstone carved by wind and water.

Daily Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive into Sioux Falls, on the eastern edge of South Dakota in time for lunch and a stroll through Falls Park, before traveling to Mitchell, home of the World’s Only Corn Palace. The Mitchell Corn Palace was part of a late 19th century race by farming communities to promote their products, and stands today as the last of the 34 “Palaces on the Prairie.” Mitchell Hampton Inn (L,D)

Day 2

During the day, the South Dakota wind brushes the diamonds in her quilt; causing blue shades to twinkle in the sunlight… She is Dignity: Of Earth & Sky rising 50 feet on the bluff near Chamberlain, on the Missouri River. A tribute to the cultures of the Sioux cultures, her message of courage, perseverance and wisdom resonates with visitors from all around the globe. An afternoon drive through the Badlands, with a stop in Wall, concludes in Rapid City. CountryInn & Suites – 2 nights (L)

Day 3

At Tatanka: Story of the Bison learn from your Sioux guide about the historic importance of buffalo and view a spectacular, larger than life, sculpture. In Deadwood there is time for lunch and browsing the shops along the historic main street. In Spearfish, learn more about life on the western prairie. (B)

Day 4-5

Visit the iconic locations of the Black Hills over the next few days: During the daytime hours, walk beneath Mount Rushmore, while in the evening you observe the magnificent tribute to our country’s freedom. At Crazy Horse, ride to the top of the carving and experience firsthand the massive undertaking of transforming a mountain. Mammoth Hot Springs is always interesting, whether you are curious about woolly mammoths or six-toed bears, you are sure to be impressed. Climb aboard the jeeps of Custer State Park, for a ride through rolling hills in search of elusive wildlife… The beauty of the area is worth the trip. Palmer Gulch Lodge – 2 nights (2B,L,D)

Day 6

Your time on the prairie and in the Black Hills concludes with a mid-day flight, arriving home early evening. (B)
