Day 1
Our adventure begins in Portland, where we'll board the Portland Spirit for a relaxing lunch cruise before following the Columbia River west to the historic hamlet of Astoria. Sitting where the great river meets the Pacific, Astoria is one of the Northwest's most interesting and picturesque communities. Best Western Columbia River Hotel - 2 nights (L)
Day 2
During our stay we'll visit Astoria Column, explore the renowned Columbia River Maritime Museum, and enjoy a nostalgic ride aboard the Astoria Riverfront Trolley. We'll also retrace the footsteps of Lewis & Clark at Fort Clatsop and have a little fun discovering some of the movie history that has made Astoria famous on the big screen. (B, D)
Day 3
From the coast, our travels turn toward one of the most dramatic chapters in Northwest history, Mount St. Helens. We'll journey into the volcanic landscape and visit the Coldwater Ridge area where clear weather can bring outstanding views of the mountain and the terrain forever changed by the 1980 eruption. Following lunch at McMenamins Kalama Harbor Lodge, we continue along the Columbia River to beautiful Hood River, our home for the remainder of the tour. Best Western Plus Hood River Inn (B, L)
Day 4
Today we climb towards Oregon's highest peak, Mount Hood, for a visit to historic Timberline Lodge. Perched high on the mountain, Timberline offers spectacular alpine scenery and is one of Oregon's great architectural landmarks. Back in the fertile Hood River Valley, we'll stop at Packer Orchards before boarding a classic sternwheeler for a dinner cruise on the Columbia River. (FB,D)
Day 5
Our final day brings another favorite mode of transportation as we board the Mount Hood Railroad for a scenic journey through the Hood River Valley. Before returning to Portland, we'll stop at magnificent Multnomah Falls, one of the most photographed and recognizable sights in the Pacific Northwest. (FB)
