Daily Itinerary

Day 1

Fly to Rapid City, South Dakota. Your upscale accommodations are centrally located. Alex Johnson Hotel by Hilton – 3 nights (L)

Day 2-3

The Black Hills were sacred mountains to the Lakota Sioux. Today they are home to monumental tributes to both the leaders of the United States and the Sioux nation. Mt. Rushmore celebrates the birth, growth and tribulations of a young country. Crazy Horse, a monument still in the making, pays homage to the leader of the Sioux. Both monuments are breathtaking and awe-inspiring. Stand on Crazy Horse’s outstretched arm and peer out over his lands. At Custer State Park see the wildlife that call it home as you traverse the rolling hills by jeep. (2FB,D)

Day 4

Transition from the Black Hills of South Dakota into the grasslands of western North Dakota. Stop in small towns along the way to get a sense of life in the region both past and present. Visit Chateau de Mores for an example of the “good life” in the West. Be awed at the colors of the Painted Canyon before checking into your hotel where luxury meets western charm and presidential history. Rough Rider Hotel – 2 nights (FB,L)

Day 5

Join Cowboy Lyle as he spins tales and weaves the history of the West into your visit to Theodore Roosevelt National Park this morning. Keep your eyes open for buffalo and wild horses. You’ll most likely fall in love with the little prairie dogs too. So cute! Come together for a Pitchfork Cookout and musical entertainment at the Medora Musical, a pageant that has been capturing the essence of the West for many decades. (FB,L,D)

Day 6

Cruise the Enchanted Highway, a 32 miles stretch of road lined with giant metal sculptures. One holds the Guinness World Record as the largest! Hear firsthand accounts of the artwork from your local guide who is also the founder of the project. Even lunch is enchanted! You’ll see… Meet the monks at Assumption Abbey before arriving in Bismarck. Radisson Hotel – 2 nights (FB,L)

Day 7

Follow in the footsteps of Lewis and Clark to Knife Village, a reconstructed Mandan settlement. The expedition spent its first winter here searching for the waterway leading to the Pacific Ocean. As you walk through the village, learn about the importance of this winter layover and the culture of the people who meant so much to the expedition. After lunch the history of the expansion comes alive at the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center. Sail the Missouri River aboard a steamer, naturally, named for the famous explorers! (FB,L)

Day 8

Situated along the Missouri River, the area around Bismarck was home to one of the western-most forts during later expansion efforts. Tour General George Custer’s home at Fort Abraham Lincoln, and visit the North Dakota Heritage Center before your return flight. (FB,L)
