Rails Around Colorado 2021

Three scenic train rides during fall foliage

  • Three scenic trains: Royal Gorge, Cumbres & Toltec, Durango & Silverton
  • Royal Gorge Bridge and Park
  • Fly high above Telluride on a gondola ride

Daily Itinerary

Day 1

Fly to Denver and enjoy a hosted lunch en route to your hotel. Best Western Cañon City – 2 nights (L)

Day 2

Climb aboard the train for a scenic journey through spectacular Royal Gorge. Since 1879, these tracks have followed the winding, tumbling Arkansas River deep within the soaring, 1,000-foot granite cliffs of Colorado’s Royal Gorge. Your First Class passage includes enclosed, glass-domed cars offering the most spectacular views of this breathtaking scenery. Hanging high above the river, Royal Gorge Bridge is America’s highest suspension bridge. Reborn after a disastrous fire in 2013, the bridge and its attractions are back. Walk across the bridge or try the new aerial gondolas that glide 2,200 feet across the gorge and 1,200 feet above the Arkansas River! (B)

Day 3

Travel to Salida for a walking tour focused on the history of this charming town. After lunch and some free time continue on to Alamosa, arriving at your hotel in the late afternoon where a welcome reception awaits. Hampton Inn (B,L)

Day 4

Crossing back and forth across the Colorado and the New Mexico border, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is truly a memorable experience. You will sense the grandeur of the Rocky Mountains as you travel along the narrow gauge tracks through tunnels, above deep gorges, and over Cumbres Pass. Because of limited space, only the first 10 people who register for the tour will ride in the First Class Parlor Car. The train’s journey ends in Chama, New Mexico, where you will continue by motorcoach to Durango in Colorado. DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Durango (B,L)

Day 5

The route to Silverton aboard the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is an unforgettable journey along the spectacular Animas River. The route boasts some of Colorado’s most striking canyon scenery. Free time is planned in Silverton, a former silver mining camp now a designated National Historic Landmark District. Continue by motorcoach to Telluride, a historical town tucked into a box canyon surrounded on three sides by 14,000-foot peaks. The town’s colorful Victorian-era homes, clapboard storefronts, boutiques, art galleries, gourmet restaurants and historic buildings are a delight to explore. The Hotel Telluride – 2 nights (FB,L)

Day 6

This morning take a historical walking tour before a hosted lunch and some free time to visit the shops in town or take the gondola that climbs 1,790 vertical feet before reaching Station St. Sophia at 10,540 feet. It’s a quiet 13-minute ride from town with breathtaking scenery and 360 degree panoramic views from high atop the mountain. (FB,L)

Day 7

Depart this fall foliage mountain paradise with a return drive to Durango and fly home this afternoon. (FB)
