Daily Itinerary

Day 1

Fly to Manchester, NH, aboard Southwest Airlines and overnight locally. Rest well for your Fall Foliage Spectacular begins in earnest tomorrow! Courtyard by Marriott

Day 2

Take the scenic route to Canterbury Shaker Village to explore the settlement of the pious religious group who called it home for over a century. Hanover is next, home of prestigious Ivy League Dartmouth College. Nearby is the Saint Gaudens National Historic Site, preserving the home and studio of America’s foremost sculptor. Dinner at your historic inn is preceded by a reception of Vermont-made wine, beer and “nibbles.” Quechee Inn at Marshland Farm (FB,D)

Day 3

See the largest granite quarry in the world, the Rock of Ages, where your guide will share his passion for all things granite. Next you’ll visit Montpelier, the nation’s smallest state capital, for lunch, but save room for dessert! Sugar on Snow is heated maple syrup drizzled over shaved ice. It is heavenly, and Morse Farm still serves it up the old-fashioned way – with sour pickles! Onward to Lake Champlain. Basin Harbor Resort – 2 nights (FB,D)

Day 4

Just up the shoreline from Basin Harbor is “New England’s Smithsonian,” the Shelburne Museum. The afternoon is at your leisure to explore your lakeside paradise, followed by a special 6-course dinner including wine pairings for a memorable farewell to Basin Harbor. (FB,D)

Day 5

The thrill of ascending the Northeast’s highest peak is just as enchanting today as it was in 1869 when Sylvester Marsh opened the Mount Washington Cog Railway to the 6,289-foot summit. From there you’ll have spectacular panoramic views spanning the mountains and valleys of New England. In Lincoln, the Café Lafayette Dinner Train awaits your arrival with a two-hour culinary experience you’ll long remember. Loon Mountain Resort (FB,D)

Day 6

Ascend Loon Mountain with an aerial tram ride to the top for spectacular views, then travel the famed Kancamagus Highway for its rich history and breathtaking beauty. Your final destination today is beautiful Portland, which you’ll see with a local guide. Holiday Inn – 2 nights (FB)

Day 7

Spend your last full day exploring the countryside around Portland with stops at Ricker Hills Apple Orchard and Norlands Living History Center, the latter an 1800s working living-history farm. Your farewell meal is none other than a traditional Maine “lobstah suppah.” (FB,L,D)

Day 8

Depart for Boston where you’ll follow the footsteps of history and have lunch (“chowdah” anyone?) before heading to the airport and your return flight home. (FB,L)
