Daily Itinerary

Day 1-2

Take a mid-morning flight (how civilized!) to Kearney, Nebraska situated along the Platte River in time for dinner. Check into your hotel for the next two nights. After breakfast, explore the area with a local guide on the way to the Crane Trust Nature Visitor Center. You’ll see hundreds of cranes eating in the fields. Next, you eat! Enjoy a late lunch before visiting the Kearney Archway, a must-see attraction! It’s a museum that straddles I-80 with exhibits celebrating the courageous spirit of the pioneers that headed out west to build our country. Recharge and grab a snack back at the hotel before viewing the evening fly-in as over 250,000 cranes settle in for the night on the river. Rest up for an early morning departure. Kearney Best Western Plus – 2 nights (1B,1L,1D)

Day 3

Why so early? Because we must get to the blinds to catch the morning lift-off, a truly amazing sight! You’ve never heard such raucous noise! Afterwards, it’s off to Hastings, a quaint Midwestern town for a quick stop at the Hastings Museum for a little fun. Remember the Kool-Aid Man? The story behind this “fruit drink” is pretty interesting! Enjoy a little free time in town before check-in. After a much needed nap, grab a bite for dinner at one of the nearby restaurants. Holiday Inn Express – Hastings (B,L)

Day 4

Red Cloud was the childhood home of Willa Cather, award winning author of American classics such as O’Pioneers!, My Antonia, and The Song of the Lark. Known for her poignant portrayal of European immigrants and their role in the settlement of the prairies, Cather has also become beloved for her sense of place and descriptions of the prairie. In Red Cloud, visit her childhood home and memorial foundation. In McCook, dinner is included at one of the local eateries… I hope it isn’t chicken! Cobblestone Hotel & Suites – McCook (B,L,D)

Day 5

Rise and shine! You’ll be up before the chickens this morning to head out on the prairie. There is nothing quite like a prairie sunrise! Well, that is until the prairie chickens magically appear out of nowhere. Once the females arrive, the males put on quite the show… dancing, stomping, and making their distinctive mating call. Who knew a little chicken could be so loud?! One final stop at the Golden Spike Tower overlooking the expansive rail yard completes our time in Nebraska as we depart from North Platte. (B,L)
