Daily Itinerary

Day 1

Begin in Omaha. What’s for lunch? Midwestern beef of course! Other options available. Check into your hotel, home of the popular Manager’s Reception. Embassy Suites Omaha Downtown Old Market (L)

Day 2

At the Durham Museum, a once-busting train station bringing people and goods to and from the region. Dozens of tracks meet at the adjacent rail yard then veer in every direction. Stop for lunch as we travel to nearby Hastings, a quaint Midwestern town that everyone knows something about but doesn’t know they do. Confused? Remember the Kool-Aid Man? The story behind this “fruit drink” born here is pretty interesting! Learn more at the Hastings Museum. Best Western Plus Kearney – 2 nights (FB,L)

Day 3

Get acquainted at the Crane Trust Nature & Visitor Center on the Platte River where you’ll see hundreds of them eating in the fields and waterways. Lunch is back in town, then experience the Great Platt River Road Archway Monument, a must-see attraction! It’s a museum straddling I-80 celebrating the courageous pioneers that set their sights on westward expansion, many bound for a place that should sound familiar – Sacramento! Recharge and grab a snack at the hotel before the evening fly-in. Over 250,000 cranes settle in for the night on the Platte River! You need to rest for an early morning. (B,L)

Day 4

Why so early? To catch the morning lift-off from the Rowe Sanctuary, a truly amazing sight! You’ve never heard such raucous noise! Next up is Red Cloud, the childhood home of Willa Cather, award-winning author of American classics such as My Antonia, The Song of the Lark and O’Pioneers! Known for her poignant portrayal of European immigrants and their role in the settlement of the prairies, Cather is beloved for her sense of place and descriptions of the prairie. You’ll visit the National Willa Cather Center to see her home and foundation museum. Tonight’s dinner spotlights a regional fast food icon in McCook. Just hope it isn’t chicken! Why? Keep reading. Cobblestone Hotel & Suites – McCook (B,L,D)

Day 5

Rise and shine! You’ll be the ones waking up the chickens this morning. There is nothing quite like a prairie sunrise! Well, that is until the prairie chickens magically appear out of nowhere. Once the females arrive, the males put on quite the show…dancin’, stompin’ and making their distinctive mating call. Who knew a little chicken could be so loud? Lunch is served en route to Denver for an early evening departure. (B,L)
