Missions III: The Last Stops Along el Camino Real

Overview

History unfolds along the el Camino Real in sunny Southern California. Visit three missions and the only surviving Asistencia, Mission San Antonio de Pala.

Daily Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive in Orange County and travel down the coast to Mission San Luis Rey, the King of the Missions. After a casual lunch, tour and explore the museum focusing on the Luiseno culture and their contributions. The historic cemetery dates back to 1797 and the arrival of Spanish missionaries. Visit the only surviving Asistencia in the Mission System, Mission San Antonio de Pala founded to serve the local tribes, work that continues today. Arrive at your hotel in time for complimentary cocktails and nibbles. Dinner is on your own at the hotel or one of the many nearby restaurants. Embassy Suites – Downey – 2 nights (L)

Day 2

Mission San Fernando Rey, still an active church, had many troubles yet persevered over the centuries. Its story will inspire! Lunch is at a long-time favorite, The Tam O’ Shanter known for its prime rib. Mission San Gabriel, the midpoint between San Diego and Carmel, is your next stop. What a gift shop! Dinner is at the Anaheim White House, a local institution with a charitable heart. Over the years they have fed over two million needy children! (FB,L,D) 

Day 3

The Mission Inn, built in 1903, intended to draw tourist, still does today! After an architectural tour enjoy lunch in a beautiful Spanish setting. The missions had olives and so shall we! But not just any olives: Graber Olives! Stop for a tour, tasting and shopping. Logan’s Candies makes us a sweet souvenir to take home before an early evening flight home.  (FB,L)
