Highway 101 – The Oregon Coast, Berry Nice
The most spectacular coastline in America, a coach/fly tour
This morning, our cars deliver you to the Sports Leisure office for departure on our coach headed north. Travel through the Napa Valley, with a stop for lunch in Ukiah. On up Hwy. 101, into redwood country.
The Avenue of the Giants was created long before the national park was established, because 101 winds its way through the trees, creating one of the best “up close” scenic experiences found anywhere. A day of travel ends in Eureka. Best Western Plus Bayshore Inn (L)
More spectacular trees await us at Redwood National Park. You may remember it was Lady Bird Johnson who lobbied her husband to protect the trees, resulting in the creation of the national park in 1968. Stop at the visitor’s center to learn more about the redwoods. Why do they only grow in very limited areas? Why do they grow so tall?
Lunch is in Gold Beach, over the border into Oregon, as we continue on up the coast to Coos Bay. The best place to stay in town also offers a casino. The Mill – Coos Bay – 2 nights (B,L)
Spend the day exploring some wonderful off-the-beaten-track attractions in and around Bandon, just to the south. Like to shop? Cranberry Sweets and Misty Meadows will offer you lots of Oregon-made treats. Jams, jellies, candy, there’s all sorts of yummy stuff to choose from. At Washed Ashore, you’ll hear the story of a small company that is trying to help clean up the ocean, one piece of trash at a time. What an inspiring story. Back in Coos Bay, a salmon bake has been arranged in your honor (alternate entrée available). (FB,D)
Learn about Coos Bay, its people and its industry, on a short tour. Shore Acres State Park is the highlight. There’s a story here and a great view. Please enjoy both. The dunes are here and why not hop in a giant dune buggy for a ride over the sand (a smaller, less adventurous ride is also offered). Pause for lunch in Florence.
Another hour up the coast is Newport, our home for the night. After check in (all rooms face the ocean), enjoy a narrated cocktail cruise on the harbor, followed by dinner and desert at Clearwater, a bay front eatery. Elizabeth Oceanfront Suites (FB,D)
One more shot of ocean scenery as we head north, past Otter Rock and leave the coast to head inland. First stop is in McMinnville, where the Evergreen Museum is home to the Spruce Goose, Howard Hughes’ experimental aircraft. Next destination is the tiny hamlet of Scholls Ferry, home to Smith’s Berry Barn. We’ll sample some berries and have milkshakes for dessert! Yum is the only word that fits…
They grow lots of berries in this region, and “u-pick” is a popular family activity. Overnight in the Portland suburb of Beaverton. Hilton Garden Inn (B,D)
Our return flight to Sacramento leaves this afternoon from Portland. First, let’s learn a little about all those berries that grow here, and then enjoy a very berry lunch before heading for home. (FB,L)
