The Calgary Stampede

Overview

Featuring the chuckwagon races and visit to Banff

Details

Much more than a ten-day long celebration with midway rides and bucking broncos, the Calgary Stampede is a gathering place that hosts, educations and entertains visitors from around the world. The purpose of the event is to preserve and celebrate western heritage, culture and community spirit. It is billed as the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth; and Canada’s largest music festival with five stages and over 300 performers from around the world. You can take in world-class agricultural events, experience First Nations culture and shop in western-theme stalls. And of course, best of all, is the nightly entertainment featuring the famous Chuckwagon Races and fireworks.

  • Reserved seating for the opening day parade, afternoon rodeo and evening chuckwagon races
  • 2-day ticket for all the Stampede activities: music, horse shows, and demonstrations
  • Gondola ride with spectacular views of Bow Valley and Banff National Park
  • Step back into the history of Calgary at Heritage Park
  • Visit Studio Bell, home of Canada’s National Music Centre
  • 5-night stay in Calgary lends itself to a more leisurely pace

Daily Itinerary

Day 1-2

Upon your arrival in Calgary, spend the afternoon and next day getting a feel for Alberta. Dinner is included tonight at the Calgary Tower, overlooking the city. Spend Thursday at the Heritage Park Historical Village, one of Canada’s largest living history museums complexes. The park’s exhibits span the early 1860s fur trade to the petroleum and automobile-dominated 1950s. Enjoy a contemporary cowboy lunch and tour of the park with a costumed living history guide. Hiton Garden Inn – Downtown Calgary – 5 nights (B,L,D)

Day 3-4

It’s stampede time! Don your cowboy boots, all things denim, and top it off with a cowboy hat and bandana! Festivities begin with a two hour parade right through downtown Calgary as the horses, cowboys, cowgirls and other participants walk along Main Street. You will enjoy the pageantry from reserved bleacher seating. After the parade, depart for Stampede Park and an afternoon of exploration. Reserved seating for the afternoon rodeo is included; but if you are busy out in the Park enjoying the other sights and sounds, good for you! Return to the park for a second day of festivities, taking a break in the afternoon. The evening show is the highlight of all events with the exciting Chuckwagon races and evening show celebrating everything “Canadian Cowboy.” Our two days at the park conclude with fireworks. (2B,L)

Day 5

Leave the city and festivities behind for a quieter day. Travel east into the Canadian Rockies for a day trip to Banff. Ride up the new Banff Gondola for spectacular views out over Bow Valley. With six mountain ranges and the Bow River below the views are breathtaking. Walk along the Sulphur Mountain Boardwalk to learn more about Canada’s first national park; or stroll through the interpretive center; or maybe just get a beverage and sit enjoying the fresh air. Later browse the streets and shops of Banff for one last souvenir or gift before returning to Calgary. (B,L)

Day 6

There is time for one more quick activity, a visit to Olympic Park, before catching your flight home. (B)
