Beautiful Bodega Bay and The Coast

Overview

This leisurely visit to the coast allows you time to sit back and enjoy springtime on the coast. There is something special about the Sonoma Coast: beaches that stretch for miles, remnants of rocks forming striking sea stacks, and ah… the sound of the ocean. As you walk along Bodega Head, listen for the barking of the sea lions; and as you relax in your room, the sound of the fog horn.

Daily Itinerary

Day 1

Travel through Sonoma County to Santa Rosa for brunch at a Sports Leisure favorite, the Flamingo Hotel. After brunch, travel to Bodega Head to catch sight of the Pacific Ocean, and walk along the bluffs. Overlooking Dorian Beach, your hotel is one of the finest, four-diamond lodges in Northern California; every room looks out over the gardens of the lodge towards the water. Bodega Bay Lodge & Spa – 2 nights (BR)

Day 2

This morning enjoy a drive up the Sonoma Coast, with stunning vistas and windswept prairies capturing the imagination. As you travel along the Russian River, the forest canopy grows denser before entering Occidental, a gem of a community tucked into the redwoods. Partake in an Italian meal served family-style for lunch, then after a brief time to browse the quaint shops located in Occidental, return to the hotel for an afternoon of leisure… a full service spa awaits, along with a pool, hot tub, and bocce ball court; or maybe a walk to the beach is more your style. Day 3

An Organized Research Unit of the University of California, Davis; the Bodega Marine Laboratory is a specialized research facility. Aquariums filled with local fishes and invertebrates greet you as you walk through the lobby. A guided docent tour leads you down the hallways of the laboratory, where young research students seek to find solutions to complex environmental problems in coastal ecosystems. Outside, a tide pool display allows you to touch and experience the biodiversity and dynamic energy of the northern California coast. Lunch is included at The Tides, a Sonoma Coast landmark of “The Birds” fame. Return to Sacramento in the late afternoon. (FB,L)
