Day 2
Gold Mining was an important force in settling much of the west and Northern Nevada was no exception. Tour the operations of the world’s largest gold pit mine and learn about the strict environmental standards that are met. Nearby, the University of Reno’s Fire Science Academy trains firefighters from all over the west in combating many different kinds of fires. We’ll hope for a “burn day” and a chance to see the students in action! Lunch is included prior to the tour. Back in Elko, you have the option of visiting the excellent Northeastern Nevada Museum. Did you know Bing Crosby spent many years as a summer resident of Elko? Learn about his life in Nevada at the museum! Later in the evening, visit the newly opened California Trail Interpretive Center and enjoy a Dutch Oven Dinner served up by its volunteers. (L,D)
