Day 2
The Parks Highway is truly one of the most beautiful thoroughfares in North America. View heavy birch forests and the spectacular Knik and Matanuska Rivers while watching for wildlife. En route to Denali National Park, visit Happy Trails Kennel, the home of four time Iditarod winner, Martin Buser. Start your visit with a video that will take you from Anchorage to Nome. Martin narrates and tells stories from his 28 years of racing as well as a great deal of Iditarod history. A dog sled demonstration will follow along with the chance to meet these amazing animals. In the afternoon, keep careful watch for a glimpse of majestic Mt. McKinley or black bears along the banks of the Susitna River. Your accommodations for the next two nights are in a beautiful building of log construction, river rock fireplaces and vaulted ceilings. The lodge is perched at the edge of a bluff with spectacular views of the Denali wilderness, the Nenana River Canyon, and Denali National Park. This evening enjoy a visit to the Sheldon Center for a talk entitled “Welcome to the Sub Arctic.”

Day 3
Today travel deep into Denali National Park. With abundant wildlife and home to Mt. McKinley, the tallest mountain in North America at 20,320 feet, you’ll discover why many consider this to be our nation’s finest national park. Experience the Tundra Wilderness Tour and search the pristine backwoods for bear, moose, caribou, and Dall sheep. Travel through low valleys and high mountain passes. Along its route, beautiful landscapes can be seen at every turn, and there are many opportunities to view Mt. McKinley if the clouds cooperate.
- Full breakfast and lunch are included this day.
-
Day 4
Spend the morning at your leisure and explore on your own. Boarding the world-famous Alaska Railroad you’ll discover a whole new way to see the Alaskan landscape. Featuring large picture windows and comfortable seating for your scenic journey, you’ll head south to Talkeetna. It’s here they offer some of the best fixed-wing flightseeing in Alaska. Optional scenic flights (additional cost) will be offered based on weather.

Day 5
Girdwood is home to the Alyeska Lodge, nestled in a lush valley surrounded by mountain peaks. It is Alaska’s premier year-round resort destination. Enjoy a trip on the resort’s aerial tram; a seven-minute scenic ride from the hotel to the 2,300 ft top of Mt. Alyeska. From the tram, you can see miles in all directions with views of the Turnagain Arm, up to seven “hanging” glaciers, and endless peaks deep into the Chugach Mountain range. Don’t forget to look down! Moose and bear sightings are common, too! At the upper tram terminal, there is an observation deck providing even more breath-taking panoramic views along with the Glacier Express Restaurant.

Day 6
This morning travel to the coastal community of Seward for a visit to the Alaska Sealife Center, set on the shores of Resurrection Bay. The center performs research, education and wildlife rescue and rehabilitation. Visitors to this “window on the sea” have close encounters with puffins, octopusses, sea lions and other sealife while peeking over the shoulders of ocean scientists studying Alaska’s rich seas and diverse sea life. This afternoon visit Exit Glacier, the only part of Kenai Fjords National Park accessible by road. From the nature center, a network of short trails provides close access with different views of this active glacier. It is a perfect place to witness how glaciers reshape a landscape. This evening travel back to Girdwood with another trip onboard the Alaska Railroad on what many believe is its most scenic route.
- Full breakfast is included this day.
-
Day 7
Say farewell to Alaska and travel back to Anchorage for a city tour with time on own to explore before your return flight back to Sacramento.
