A brand new adventure in Trinity County, along with a bit of history on old Highway 99.
There aren’t many places in California that haven’t been checked out by Sports Leisure Travelers over the years, but we think (with the help of Public Television’s Huell Howser) we’ve found one; the historic town of Weaverville,nestled in the Trinity Alps, along the river of the same name.
For the sake of variety, we’ll travel old Highway 99, through Chico to Red Bluff, on the way up the valley; then head straight home on the interstate. Come and discover a rich part of California’s past in Trinity County.

Day 1
Our fleet of Carey cars delivers you to our office this morning for our 8:30am departure. Today’s route goes up Hightway 99 to Chico. Along the way, we pass towns like Gridley, Biggs and Durham.We’ve all traveled this road,but what do we know about these places? Today,you’ll learn the stories. Lunch is at the popular Sierra Nevada Brewery in Chico. There’s also a stop at the Sundial Bridge in Redding,before arriving in Weaverville in late afternoon.It’s the heart of springtime in the Central Valley and the flowers are in bloom, the crops are planted, the circle of life begins anew.

Day 2
There’s lots to do in the town Weaverville. The center point is the Old Joss House. Constructed in 1874, it was donated to the state park system in 1956.These temples were the center of culture for Chinese immigrants. Only a few are remaining. The Highland Art Center is where you’ll discover eclectic art of all kinds. Weaverville has it’s own community forest.Would you enjoy a brief walk to learn how it’s managed? The local Trinity Museum is a wealth of information. We’ll even take you to an old sawmill and for a short drive into the Trinity Alps. Dine at the Trinity Country Club this evening.

Day 3
On the return trip, we’ll stop in at Shasta City, an old mining camp dating back to 1861. Lunch in Redding, then back down the interstate (sometimes it can’t be avoided) to Sacramento, arriving ahead of the afternoon traffic.

“The Rock” Featuring a cruise to Alcatraz
The sights and sounds of Alcatraz come alive during your visit to “The Rock.” Cross over the Bay Bridge and travel along the Embarcadero to the Fisherman’s Wharf for lunch at one of the area’s oldest restaurants, Scoma’s where you will have a choice on site from a limited menu, including the fresh catch of the day. Our cruise departs for Alcatraz midafternoon with time on the island for exploring on your own with the included audio tour. Return to Sacramento following your visit.
